Chef's Walking Tour of the Italian Market

The Chef's Tour of Philadelphia's historic Italian Market is a two-hour walking tour of the country's oldest outdoor ethnic market.

The tour is given by Louise Cianfero Simpson, the historian for the Market and the author of two cookbooks. "Italian Food & Folklore" and "101 Desserts from Philadelphia's Italian Market". In her book, she provides many traditional recipes, with histories and backgrounds on ingredients and the folklore that produced them. Lots of little tidbits and folklore make for interesting reading.

Location: Northwest Corner of 9th Street and Washington Avenue. Detailed Meeting Location will be provided upon confirmation.

Itinerary

Chef's Tour of the Italian Market

 

Guests visit an authentic Italian salumeria (Italian deli), cheese shops, a place where Italian pasta is made, and an authentic Sicilian pasticceria. (Pasta shop), and a kitchen equipment shop where you may see a famous chef shopping!

Guests learn the secrets of Balsam vinegar, hear why southern Italians cook "red" and Northern Italians cook 'white' and some of the stories and legends behind some of Italy's most famous dishes and all the while sampling from almost a dozen different shops.

Guests receive authentic Italian recipes, discount cards for shopping but best of all get to sample Italian delicacies.

Let us take you behind the scenes that most people are not privy to, and be provided you with truly interesting information.
